TODAY I FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS MOST
Back when I was in HR and I was studying for my Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification, one of the themes we studied and phrases I had to memorize was:
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
This quote is by legendary leadership expert Steven Covey.
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
When I first heard the phrase, I thought, Wow, do I really need to memorize this?
I was studying for a test where I had to memorize things about labor relations, unions, overtime pay rules etc. so as much as I love personal development, I didn’t fully understand why this one sentence was SO IMPORTANT.
Fast forward years later to now. Once I became a full time Life Coach I let my PHR certification lapse, I no longer do continuing education in HR as I focus my continuing education time on things like sex, love and relationships.
My hubby was very amused the day I had to read about orgasms for homework. 😉
And whenever I think of studying for that test, the ONE thing I remember is that phrase.
I use it regularly. At home and in my work projects.
What is the main thing here? Are we focused on that?
With my hubby the main thing is to cultivate friendship, connection, and sexy times.
With my friends and coaching clients it’s to create no judgement zones where we can be fully self expressed aka our Awesomest, Coolest, Badassiest selves.
And yet sometimes I forget the main thing. I let things like anger, disappointment, stress or fear get in the way.
And then I come back to that phrase.
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
I have noticed that everything in my life gets better when I do that. EVERYTHING.
My marriage blossoms, my friendships deepen, my business grows.
Sometimes it’s easier to think of the main thing in terms of feelings I want to create and have regularly.
Love.
Relaxation.
Belonging.
Acceptance.
Joy.
Passion.
Accomplishment.
Contribution.
Confidence.
When I look at that list, and I think, “those are my main things” then everything in my day get easier. Every decision I make is more focused.
Everything I do either contributes to those feelings or takes away from them. Whenever there is a take away I know I am NOT keeping the main thing, the main thing.
Whenever I feel those feelings, I know I am on track.
What is YOUR main thing?
Does your schedule today, right now reflect how important that is to you?
